With Help from Kentucky Humane Society, Miss Red Found Her Trusted, Forever Home
I’m Miss Red, a red Coonhound mix. I was in pretty bad shape when I arrived at Kentucky Humane Society (KHS) from a county shelter. I was part of KHS’s “Saving Kentucky’s Shelter Dogs Project 2.0” program, which was working to help dogs like me that might have been euthanized without extra support.
For me, the problem was trust issues. I’d had a really rough life, and I had pretty much shut down. I didn’t trust anyone, and I avoided everyone.
Luckily, the staff knew that they could win me over. They enrolled me in their behavior modification program at the Sam Swope Pet Retreat, and started working to build my confidence.
They got me to trust people again by teaching me a fun, new game called “go say hi.” I would touch my nose to a stranger’s palm and then go back to my handler for a food reward. Over time, I learned I could control my interactions with strangers. I could decide when and if I wanted to stay longer to get to know them better.

Thanks to KHS’s programs, and the grant they got from PEDIGREE Foundation, my life changed forever! After graduating from the behavior modification program, I went to a foster home and then … best news ever… I was adopted! And I’m not the only one. In 2018, more than 3,000 dogs found homes thanks to KHS.
I love and trust my new owner, and now I have the forever home I always wanted.
